The brief epistles authored by the Apostle John are remarkably impactful. The writer gets straight to the point, presenting truths on a variety of subjects with clarity and conviction. John specifically addresses the Gnostics, who denied both the humanity and the divinity of our Lord. His letters serve as powerful tools against such heresies.

1 John – In this letter, John describes God as both “light” and “love.” The term “light”symbolizes His holiness and emphasizes the believer’s obligation to confront any sin in their life that hinders fellowship with the Father. John offers the remedy, indicating that the boldness of Christ is the foundation for cleansing through repentance, asserting that those who claim they have no sin are deceiving themselves. Love, on the other hand, pertains to God’s disposition towards us and reflects His very nature. When we embody the “love of God,” we are equipped to love one another; a lack of love for others demonstrates a failure to love God.

2 John – In this letter, John speaks to the importance of walking in truth, warning that many deceivers have entered the world. He notes that those who deny the doctrine of Christ should not be extended Christian greetings.

3 John – This letter is addressed to Gaius, a figure who must have been well-regarded among the Asian churches where John ministered in his later years. The primary focus of the letter is hospitality, commending Gaius for his kindness in welcoming Christian workers and strangers. John encourages him to continue his ministry and promises to address Diotrephes for his rejection of the truth, while he commends Demetrius for his commendable reputation. This serves as a challenge to Christians to walk in truth.
